Assalamualaikum Barak Allah Feek. May Allah swt reward your immensely for your service to the muslim ummah. My question is regarding qadaa’ salah or salah that has been missed due to any reason. First of all are we supposed to make it up or is it that once we miss a salah and its time has passed we cannot offer it anymore? Secondly, if they should be made up, is it necessary that we follow the order of the salah i.e. for example if i missed asr salah and maghrib time has come in, should i make up the asr salah first and then pray maghrib or the other way round? If I missed asr and then prayed maghrib can i still make up for asr? Jazak Allah Khair.
All praise be to Allah, and may His blessings and peace be on His last messenger, Muhammad,
There is no disagreement regarding one who misses the salat for an excuse such as sleep or forgetfulness that s/he needs to make it up. The Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) said,
“من نسي صلاة أو نام عنها فليصلها إذا ذكرها.”
“If one sleeps or forgets a prayer, let him make it up when he remembers.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim from Anas]
The disagreement is concerning one who abandons it intentionally, particularly for an extended period. It is better and safer to make it up. For those who repent after years or decades of not praying, we advise that they make up all the prayers if they can, and that obligation is a matter of agreement between the four madhâhib. If they won’t be able to make them up, then we advise them to increase their sunnah prayers, as indicated by Imams Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim.
You should follow the order unless you fear the time of the current salat will also go out, then you should in this case pray the one that is still in time, and that is according to the authorized position in the Hanbali madhhab and the Hanafis. If one attends the masjid and finds the people praying maghrib while he has not prayed asr yet, he may pray maghrib with them and then do asr, and that is according to one position in the Hanbali madhhab chosen by many and it is also the Hanafi position. The authorized report in the Hanbali madhhab, however, is that he should respect the order and pray asr then maghrib, and that seems to be the authorized view in the Shafi‘i madhhab as well. Malik says that he should pray maghrib with the congregation, then pray asr, then repeat the maghrib to respect the order.
Allah knows best.
